Kren catalogue as if taken from a Borges list. Simple principles rule.
Kren's most fabulous, or experimental, cinema is from "the Jedlersdorf" period. Kren is an unknown factor, which needs no further explanation, but very much like Brakhage, his work is getting better exposure day by day. No, too optimistic. Kren's films are clever with cinematography, and his biggest contribution must be in the company of Kandinsky, Mondrian and Duchamp. Mathematics do play an important rule (example: the length of a take was determined from the sum total of the two preceding takes).
This short film is late Kren. He had already developed and characterized his flash-editing (cuts down to single frames) technique, all based on serial patterns. This is, by the way, a rather clever contrast to the 'realist' Muhl's ideas, who used single-frame editing in the camera.
The best Kren is a few years early.
