Seinfeld’s journey from flop to acclaimed hit

7 November 2014 1:36 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Initially, Seinfeld met with a lukewarm response, a baffled network, low ratings and a volatile creator. So how did it become such a hit?

“Pilot performance: Weak”. That was the research report verdict on the 1989 pilot of new NBC sitcom Stand Up, written by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld. The episode had excited “lukewarm reactions among adults and teens and very low reactions among kids”. The audience found it annoying that the main character, a fictionalised version of comedian Jerry Seinfeld, “needed things to be explained to him”. The lead was too wimpy, the show was “too New York” (and therefore too Jewish) and worst of all, nothing happened in it. “You can’t get too excited about going to the Laundromat”, as one respondent put it. The report’s conclusion was stark: “no viewer was eager to watch the show again.”

"The Mysteries of Laura" co-stars Josh Lucas, Laz Alonso, Janina Gavankar, and Max Jenkins, and is co-executive produced by McG ("Supernatural") and Greg Berlanti ("Arrow," "Dawson's Creek"), among others. It airs on Wednesdays on NBC.

25 September 2014 6:00 AM, PDT | TooFab | See recent TooFab news »

It’s hard to believe it's been 16 years since Ali Landry made her big debut during the 1998 Super Bowl in a Doritos commercial. The spot, which was shot in a laundromat with another unknown star at the time, "Will and Grace" fan favorite Sean Hayes, immediately made the former Miss USA a household name. toofab's Rachel Hoffman sat down with the mother-of-three to reminisce about auditioning for the career-changing ad and talk about her car safety initiative.  "I remember I was new to Los Angeles. I wasn’t used to driving around and it was raining. I remember thinking, ‘I don’t want to go,’" she recalled. "But I went, and there was a room lined with gorgeous girls. I looked at the story board and they wanted us to flip around. Because I was in gymnastics and dancing my whole life – I knew I could do a few flips in this small space. »

Why Debra Messing Is Starring in The Mysteries of Laura

17 September 2014 12:30 PM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

The Mysteries of Laura should be Debra Messing's triumphant return to TV. The Will and Grace star earned much goodwill from her NBC sitcom and USA's Starter Wife, but then Smash happened. And hey, we loved Smash, but let's face it, it had its problems. Now Messing is back with the cop dramedy that can be boiled down to this: she's a mom, she's a cop and she's attempting to do it all. So why is Debra Messing starring in The Mysteries of Laura? "I loved that it was a dramedy, that there was a really smart murder-mystery that needed to be solved every week and that it was real in that you saw the messy personal lives," Messing told us. "It made me laugh out loud when I was »

Writer/Creator Gary Janetti Brings “Vicious” Brit Gay Sitcom Stateside

27 June 2014 8:22 AM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

The pairing of acting legends Sir Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi is a match made in heaven, but putting them together in a bawdy, bitchy British sitcom playing lovers who have been together for nearly 50 years? Yes, please!

Vicious aired last year in the UK and had its share of fans and critics. American viewers are finally getting a chance to decide for themselves if this show is the gay sitcom that we’ve been waiting for. (One good sign is that Vicious already has a second season order and will start shooting this fall. Hopefully the Us airings will garner solid ratings to continue airing beyond the first season).

TheBacklot sat down recently in West Hollywood with series creator Gary Janetti, who you know as a writer on such comedies as Will & Grace and Family Guy as well as being partnered with celebrity stylist/TV personality, Brad Goreski.  Janetti »

Rupert Grint Making Broadway Debut In 'It's Only A Play'

18 June 2014 9:00 PM, PDT | Uinterview | See recent Uinterview news »

Rupert Grint, best known for playing Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter series, will be making his Broadway stage debut in the comedy It’s Only A Play.

Rupert Grint's Broadway Debut

In Terrence McNally’s play, Grint will play prodigy director Frank Finger, who is bringing to life a script by a fragile-nerved writer in need of some positive reviews played by Matthew Broderick, reported Entertainment Weekly. A lot rests on Frank's ability to put together a performance for opening night that will launch the struggling writer back into critical success.

Nathan Lane is joining forces on stage once again with Broderick – with whom he starred in The Producers – as his character’s best friend. Will and Grace actress Megan Mullally is playing the play’s producer, Stockard Channing will play the leading lady, and Homeland’s F. Murray Abraham will act as a notorious critic. Micah Stock, »

TV On Tap: Jeremy Sisto Joins A&E’s “The Returned” Remake, HBO Adapting Margaret Atwood’s “MaddAddam” Trilogy and “Game of Thrones” Is HBO’s All-Time Most Watched Show

Vulture reports that the next season of Big Brother will be broadcast in HD. Big Brother is such a complicated show to film, switching from Sd to HD took three years to complete, a process that had to take breaks when it came time to airing new seasons. Big Brother is the last prime time show on the broadcast networks to still air in Sd.

Kevin Ryan, one of the guys who looked magnificent on Copper, despite all that awkward facial hair and layers upon layers of clothing, has been added to the cast of History’s upcoming mini-series Sons of Liberty. Ryan will play a British officer in the revolutionary war drama.

Darren Aronofsky is developing a series for HBO based on the Margaret Atwood MaddAddam trilogy. That series always sounded interesting to me but it also sounded depressing enough to send me to the relatively-happier works of Octavia Butler. »

How Hit Guest Stars Ended Up on TV’s Top Shows

5 June 2014 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Playing a guest role on a TV show can be one of the most difficult acting jobs: While series regulars have the luxury of building a role over time, a guest star has to drop in and create a fully fledged character, sometimes with only a few lines.

Dawn Steinberg, executive VP of Talent and Casting at Sony Pictures Television, which produces such shows as “The Blacklist” and “Masters of Sex,” compares it to visiting a household. “You’re walking into a family dinner, the table has already been set,” she notes. “And it’s your job to sit at the table and pass the turkey, pass the vegetables, and fit in. Whether you’re the villain, the good guy, the uncle, the aunt, the doctor, the lawyer, your job is to fit in with an already established cast, and that’s really hard.”

NBC's 'The Music Man Live': Let's cast it!

Dammit, NBC — why’d you have to announce an upcoming live version of The Music Man that likely won’t premiere until 2015? How are we supposed to get excited for Peter Pan Live when we know that this is on the horizon?

No disrespect to the Lost Boys, but Meredith Willson’s 1957 classic is a much better show than the 1954 stage version of Pan. (So long as Mary Martin isn’t involved, anyway.) The songs are catchier, the book is wittier, the production numbers are more fun — and there’s much less chance of high-wire mishaps, which actually might make »
