'Extract' Roundtable with Mike Judge - Live

10 December 2009 11:17 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

I'm currently sitting in a virtual roundtable session [read: chat room] with Mike Judge (the man behind Extract, Office Space and Idiocracy) as he talks about his latest film Extract and fields questions from his fellow chatroom patrons. The roundtable comes to you courtesy of the new Blu-ray and DVD release of Extract. The page will update as questions are asked. If you want to ask a question, leave it in the comments and with luck it'll show up here.

Q: Was there instant chemistry when the actors began working together or did it take some time for them to gel?

Mike Judge: For the most part it was instant. And most of them had already worked together or knew each other, so it all gelled nicely.

Q: Was it your idea to cast rocker Gene Simmons as bench lawyer Joe Adler?

Mike Judge: Yeah, I had originally described the character »

Minnie Driver to Guest Star on Modern Family

13 November 2009 2:38 AM, PST | Hollyscoop.com | See recent HollyScoop news »

Modern Family is the hot new comedy everyone wants to guest star on! The sitcom has already scooped up Edward Norton and Elizabeth Banks, and now we hear Minnie Driver has been added to the dysfunction! We haven’t seen Minnie do comedy since her stint on Will and Grace as Karen’s bitchy arch nemesis. And in her Modern Family episode, Driver will play a friend and former co-worker of Claire’s (Julie Bowen). The two reconnect after years of being out of touch and things are not exactly how they remembered. The episode is slated to air »

Shit My Dad Says: The Next Big CBS Sitcom?

10 November 2009 10:12 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

It isn't exactly Texts from Last Night: The Movie -- a concept that I've long-contended would be one of pure brilliance -- but it is something new. Shit My Dad Says, the extremely popular Twitter account from 29-year old Maxim.com senior editor Justin Halpern, is becoming a book -- then it's becoming a television show courtesy of the folks at CBS and the producers of Will and Grace. After 72-tweets and the flooding of over 700,000 followers to the account, CBS seems more than confident that Halpern can take his concept -- based on the fact that he recently moved in with his 73-year old father -- and turn it into the next in a long line of successful sitcoms, along the lines of Two and Half Men and the aforementioned Will and Grace. The feed is based on tidbits of wisdom and observations made by Halpern's father, Sam, throughout the day. Today's »

'Shit My Dad Says' Heads to TV

10 November 2009 9:21 AM, PST | newser.com | See recent newser news »

Move over, Al Bundy: A project based @shitmydadsays, the Twitter feed engineered by the son of a cantankerous father, has been picked up by CBS. The creators of Will and Grace are on board as executive producers, with that selfsame transcriber of a son taking writing duties. The microblog’s title will change once on-air, the Hollywood Reporter adds, helpfully. Justin Halpern, 29, has also recently signed a book deal, as the account started in August springboarded to its now more than 700,000 followers. A sample: "Just pay the parking ticket. Don't be so outraged. You're not a freedom fighter »

The End of the World? Shit My Dad Says Twitter to Become a Sitcom

10 November 2009 12:24 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

This has to be a first. Uber popular Twitter account shitmydadsays has already landed 29-year-old writer Justin Halpern a book deal, but today we've learned CBS also wants to make a sitcom out of the musings of Halpern's kooky father. The show will be exec produced by former Will and Grace alums, and Halpern will write and co-exec the script along with Patrick Schumacker. And yes, the title will be changed for television. Halpern started the feed after moving back in with his parents in San Diego, and he quickly learned that people think has father is hi-larious. Some recent gems include: Son, no one gives a shit about all the things your cell phone does. You didn't invent it, you just bought it. Anybody can do that. Nobody is that important. They eat, shit, and screw, just like you. Maybe not shit like you, you got those stomach problems. »

30 Rock Review: "Stone Mountain" (episode 4.3)

30 October 2009 9:40 AM, PDT | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

Two weeks ago, Todd VanDerWerff from the Av Club wrote a blog entitled “30 Rock’s Dangerous Decline and the Shadow of Will and Grace,” which I took some umbrage with mostly because I disagreed with many of the points ... and partially because there were a few that I did in fact agree with. He basically posited that the lack of character development and proliferation of plots has been what's bringing the show down, though that's a bit of a reduction of his argument.  Last week’s episode was particularly disappointing and made me question whether VanDerWerff was right on more »

On TV: Cougar Town

22 September 2009 5:00 PM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Don't buy into the critics' fuss over the title of Bill Lawrence's latest ABC sitcom. The only show with a well thought-out title in history was Cheers; it was the name of the bar but it also indicated the jovial nature of the show and implied a level of camaraderie directly related to sharing a drink with your fellow man. Most programs rely on the main character's name (Will and Grace, The Simpsons), jokey wordplay (Accidentally On Purpose, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Gary Unmarried) or are too simple for analysis (Friends, ER). At some point, Bill Lawrence had a whiteboard full of titles that would have evoked less critical debates about the word "cougar," but he opted for the most sensational name. Let's get past it and look at the actual program. »

All-Time Best TV and Movie Drunks

19 September 2009 9:25 AM, PDT | newser.com | See recent newser news »

Everyone likes a funny drunk, right? Barstools lists the most lovable movie and TV boozehounds of all time: Who comes to mind first? Norm Peterson from Cheers , of course. "The crowd shouted 'Norm' every time he walked through the door to belly up to the bar." Will and Grace sidekick Karen Walker "was always sloshed or looking for her next drink and never failed to make us laugh." Drunks don't get much better than Old School 's Frank the Tank, who "steals laughs in every scene he’s in." The title character in Bad Santa may not be lovable, but "he »

Movie Review: My One and Only (2009)

Mark Rendall, Renee Zellweger and Logan Lerman in My One and Only

Photo: Freestyle Releasing I guess I shouldn't be too surprised there is a mild bit of Oscar buzz surrounding Renee Zellweger and her performance in My One and Only, especially since it now seems as if every performance Zellweger gives is going to be no different than the last. She's been nominated before for doing the same thing, why not this time? Right? Of course, this is hardly a ringing endorsement, but I will admit My One and Only isn't the cliched tedium I expected it to be based on the film's generic trailer. Instead, it has several sweet family moments and an ending I really thought pulled things together nicely. As for Zellweger, she's perfectly fine, but she has done little to really impress me since Cold Mountain in 2003 and of course Chicago one year earlier. However, »

Extract: A Testicular Romance

28 August 2009 7:24 AM, PDT | www.culturecatch.com | See recent CultureCatch news »

What’s the difference between a comedy on TV and one in the theaters? Is The 40 Year Old Virgin funnier than Everybody Loves Raymond? Is The Hangover edgier than Will and Grace? Is The Proposal wilder than Sex and the City? What are we yearning for on the big screen that will egg us on to shell out $12 dollars for a ticket and another $20 or so for popcorn and a Coke?

It’s oddly Mike Judge’s latest big screen offering, Extract, that elicits these thoughts. Mr. Judge, the creative force behind "everyone’s favorite" juvenile-delinquent slacker cartoon, Beavis and Butthead; the animated Texas redneck with a heart of gold, King of the Hill; and surprising cult DVD hit Office Space (1999).

DVD Playhouse—May 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Paramount Centennial Collection Paramount Studios releases two more classic titles from its library on special edition DVD: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is John Ford’s last masterpiece (although he would go on to direct two more very good films) from 1962: about an Eastern lawyer (James Stewart) who travels west only to find primal brutality in the form of sadistic bandit Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin, great as always) and pragmatic brutality in local rancher Tom Doniphon (John Wayne), each two sides of a coin that represent a way of life slowly dying out as Stewart’s modern brand of civilization tames the West. A perfect film, period. Howard HawksEl Dorado is essentially a remake of his earlier classic Rio Bravo, with John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and a young James Caan as lawmen joining forces against corrupt cattle barons. Great fun. Two disc sets. »

Previews: There's a Giant Penisish Monster in Alien Trespass (No, really!)

31 March 2009 4:59 PM, PDT | doorQ.com | See recent doorQ.com news »

The makers of Alien Trespass, the new Sf feature that harkens back to B-movies of yore, had a slight problem with their evil monster for their movie: it looked like a giant penis.

For some of us this wouldn't be a problem (and who you are shall remain nameless) but for the producers of the film this was beyound the lowbudget, cheesy monster they wanted.

Q: Speaking of which, the monster in your movie has some scary moments -- but it's also kind of silly-looking.

A: We worked on drawings and thorough designs, and when we finally went out to take a look at a full-sized model... it looked like a giant penis. It even had the shape on the top. So we changed the shape slightly so it wasn't quite so obvious. The monsters weren't all that great in the '50s, and the directors had to be really »

Argiris Karras

AfterElton.com: Tell us something about yourself. How old are you? Where are you from? What do you do for fun? What kind of music do you listen to?

Argiris Karras: I'm 19 years old and I was born in Toronto, Ontario, one of the greatest cities around!

For fun I often chill with my friends and do a whole bunch of random things such as play soccer and video games, watch movies and listen to music. »

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (January 30, 2009)

29 January 2009 8:23 PM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

I’ve been thinking about sexuality a lot lately, which is different than thinking about sex, but not by much.

Why are most men the way they are about sex — and so different from most women? Are gay men different from straight men? And what does the internet have to do with it?

Interesting questions, no? Even if they're not, the subject of "Male Sexuality" gives me an excuse to write about sex in this week’s edition of the Best.Gay.Week.Ever!

How Sexual Are You?

In order to get in the mood, let’s begin with a brief quiz, shall we? (Fyi, the quiz program won't let me use "dirty" words — words like "sex".)

Male Sexuality Is A Beautiful Thing

I’ve never been one of those who say, “Men are pigs” — implying that those of us with “Y” chromosomes are somehow less evolved or less developed than, »

McCormack Premiere Fright For Son

25 January 2009 6:18 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Will + Grace star Eric McCormack had to abandon the premiere of his new alien movie, because he had to comfort his terrified six-year-old son.

McCormack was convinced Finnegan would enjoy Alien Trespass, which he describes as an homage to 50s sci-fi films - so he dressed him up and took him along to his first screening at the Palm Springs Film Festival.

But the treat backfired.

The actor explains, "We took him to his first premiere. He's all dressed up. Ten minutes in, the alien shoots at a coyote and it melts. And my son turned to me and said, 'Ok, we're going now.'

"So I spent most of the premiere in the parking lot, discussing how 'Star Wars aliens aren't scary'." »
