Storyline

Follow-up to Ed Wood's "Plan 9 from Outer Space" about the walking dead, It opens in a cemetery. Criswell, the "real" medium, rises from his coffin to tell us of "monsters to be despised." Dr. Acula (Kenne Duncan) is a phony medium aided by Valda Hansen, a bogus ghost, and big Tor Johnson, wearing rags and horrible scar makeup as Lobo. The doctor swindles people by pretending to contact dead relatives, but then accidentally succeeds in reviving a bunch of corpses that bury him alive! Sat unreleased for 23 years because Wood couldn't pay the lab bill! Followed by "Sinister Urge" in 1961 (Wood's last film). Written by alfiehitchie

Trivia

The séances featured in the film have some atypical elements. Skulls are set on the séance table and skeletons are sitting around it. The sound effects and floating trumpet would not be out of place in 19th-century séance, though the electronically produced voice of the deceased is a far more recent element. See more »

Karl: Who are you?
Leader of the Dead: You ask who we are, yet it was you who called for our return.
Karl: This is impossible! I hired actors to play the dead. You're not my actors!
Leader of the Dead: Your powers were even stronger than you yourself realized. You have brought us back from the grave. Once every 13 years, when called by a strong medium such as you, we are given a brief 12 hours of freedom from our deep pit of darkness. Those few hours are almost gone. We must return to the ...

S10's Reviews: Night of the Ghoul (1959)
1 November 2006 | by (The Void) – See all my reviews

Ed Wood rounds up the usual suspects for this craptastic shocker. Lt. Moore is hot on the trail of shyster medium Dr. Acula (Uh huh, Dracula…I get it) who sets up his show in the good old Dr. Vornoff's (Bela Lugosi's lair in 'Bride of the Gorilla' (1955)) old lair to bilk little old ladies hard earned social security by channeling their love ones with floating sheets and phantom trumpet players who couldn't hold a tune even if they had pockets.. This guy couldn't talk to the dead with a two cans connected by string.

The Woodmeister really outdoes himself with 'Ghouls'. I was laughing my butt off during the good doctor's séances. Oh great swami salami please raise the dead. 'Night of the Ghouls' is badly acted with horrible dialogue and some of the cheesiest effects in all his films. I had a great time with this one. 4/5
