I thought Meredith's performance was a little stiff, but other than that, a true classic. Hard to go wrong when you've got none other than Mark Twain writing your dialogue. In this case the sparse set actually enhances the storyline, as wholesale advances in the plot line are signaled by simple movements, so brilliantly was the screenplay done. The play almost has an air of Greek tragedy at times, and then a turn of humor here and there not only entertains, but gives tremendous insight into what it must be to be the first man and first woman. The final scene is tremendous and touching, and a tribute to the great ability of David Birney to make his character believable without the use of complicated makeup or costume. A true tour-de-force for both actors.
