Commercialising milk
My main reason for seeing this was for completest sake, to see as many Terrytoons as possible. Or at least the ones that are available, which are most but not all. Am also, as said quite a number of times, a big fan of animation and have for some time been watching that that is older and made on a lower budget with varying success (mainly between mediocre and decent, few great and with a fair share of weak ones), having been intrigued for some time.
The Terrytoons cartoons are very variable, always outstanding in the music and the animation improved hugely over-time but the gags and characterisations tended to be hit and miss in quality and there was an increase in recycled ideas. Very like Terrytoons' 1942 cartoons, this, which is as has been said basically a milk commercial, is an inconsistent cartoon. By all means, it is watchable but merely at best average and as far as the 1942 Terrytoons go it's somewhere in the middle.
One of the cartoon's two best assets is the music. As always, outstanding, beautifully and cleverly orchestrated and arranged and the lively energy is present throughout, doing so well with adding to the action.
The animation is the other best merit, indicative of that at this point of Terrytoons' output the production values had come on a long way since the studio first started and that is obvious. The ambitious, elaborate detail in the backgrounds is on display, and fluidity of drawing and movement continues to improve, and it's neatly synchronised.
There is charm here and it is unforced, as well as mild amusement occasionally (i.e. riffing the Baby Snooks, but familiarity is needed for that) and there is a cohesion to the cartoon's structure.
Like a vast majority of Terrytoons, the story however is a long way from great. Practically plot-less and not always there in terms of momentum, also like a series of scenes pretty much strung along. Transitions from scene to scene is not always smooth.
A lot of the pace needed more oomph and other gags suffered from being predictable and either corny or tired. Too many parts are very cliched and like too many recycled ideas, when it came to ideas Terrytoons had definitely run out of them by this point.
Parts are a little too on the cute side and a big problem is that the titular character is neither interesting or likeable, found him tiresome actually.
In summation though, not a bad cartoon while not being an exceptional one. 5/10 Bethany Cox
