Whew. More dreary than one could imagine. The poster art suggests this is an Italian comedy, but its really a morbid, downbeat "family picture," a cross between LOVE BUG and POPI, that was filmed in downtown San Diego, CA, in what looks like the slums. Poor John "Gomez" Astin looks extremely depressed (or possibly drunk) as a downwardly-mobile loser named Pepper, who buys a junk Caddie and turns free-lance hack, surrounded by non-english speakers barking bad phonetics. Much of this pathetic kiddyflick looks ad-libbed on the set or patched up in postproduction. Comic great Allan Sherman has a harried, pitiful scene as a stressed- out businessman (in a way, he plays here the dark side of the lovable losers portrayed in his beloved songs,) and who knows what prompted Frank Sinatra Jr. to appear in this, merely to suffer one of John's bizarre paranoid hallucinations. Lots of "zany" p.o.v. driving and military base scenes. A couple of bad pop songs. Very sad, very obscure and about as far from funny as you can get. And this is the first G-rated kiddie movie I've run across that uses the F- word. Allan Sherman says, ironically, "What is this, F---ing Disneyland!" A verybadkidfilm, for verybadkids only.
