Little gem of a video noir about power
29 January 2015 | by (New York, New York) – See all my reviews

Once you get past the typically bad pun of a title (think: Jack Nicholson), VAGINA TOWN proves to be an effective seamy noir from the prolific Henri Pachard. I recommend it to fans looking for a pearl among dross.

Though her chosen name is now daily in the headlines, '90s starlet Isis Nile is largely forgotten. She's terrifically sexy, especially in her talking-dirty patter here, cast as a sultry but hapless whore named Chastity under the dubious protection of down & out private dick Steven St. Croix. Isis is meanwhile searching for her missing friend Lolita.

Marc Wallice is surprisingly effective as the nasty crime boss who rules over the region known as Vagina Town. Pachard invests the scenes of Wallice bossing around or physically dominating his underlings with an intensity one doesn't expect in an assembly-line video, and this footage along with scenes highlighting Isis' adorable body are memorable.

The dialog is often quite snappy and self-referential, as when Wallice reprimands a whore for her fake-groaning while he tests her equipment, telling her to knock off "that Spice Channel sh*t"".

Working with a minimal budget, Pachard nonetheless manages to conjure up a true fatalistic noir mood for St. Croix, left alone at the finish.

No great shakes across the continuum of cinema, but compared to its video peers of two decades back, VAGINA TOWN shines.
