To be frank, I'm kind of enjoying bashing these Paul J. Smith shorts, mainly because there are so many flaws in the Woody films which make up a good 80% of his filmography. The cheap animation, the phoned-in voices, the weak gags, and the autopilot direction of the average Smith short are all ripe targets for skewering, considering I watch this crap of my own volition, knowing full well it stinks.
So I went to watch this one and found Knothead and Splinter make appearances. Not very long appearances, mind you, but they're still there. June Foray's performance is so flat and phoned in that it defies description, which is strange, since she's normally very energetic in the other shorts she's in, and the audio commentaries she's recorded for the DVDs of same.
To cut to the chase, this is essentially a rip off of the WB short The Stupor Salesman, except Woody isn't trying to sell items to a criminal. All the jokes are the exact same tired gags you've seen in a million other Woody cartoons, the animation is decidedly cheap, and the film generally has the feel that neither the animators, the layout artists, the director, the voice artists, or even the editor cared about it. At least in other Woody shorts, it felt like they cared a smidgen about the hackwork they were dumping into movie theatres. This feels like a 20th season Saturday Night Live episode, with far less vile "humour" about Satan and gushing bodily fluids.
You do not want to go near this cartoon with the longest pole your mind can fathom. Don't watch it.
