Trivia

Martin Radley makes a comment about the false name he used when he rang Barbara Everton and links it to the poem "Enoch Arden". This is a poem published in 1864 by Alfred Lord Tennyson, the Poet Laureate at the time. The poem is about a man goes to sea to earn money to support his wife and family and returns after ten years to find his wife is remarried with a new child. See more »

Dennis Price as a thief and blackmailer who is himself blackmailed
21 September 2012 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

The story opens with a jewel robbery and shooting, with Dennis Price the thief (and two confederates who drop out of the story altogether). Price, who has been thought dead, lives under a new name with another underworld figure, Bonar Colleano. When the shooting victim dies, Bonar blackmails Price. Price visits his ex-wife who has remarried and blackmails her! That's the setup. A good many complications ensue as the good wife tries to raise money, keep her husband out of the loop, and fend off the inquiries of the detective on the case who happens to know her. Furthermore, Price has two girl friends on the side. All this and more in a little over an hour.

Price is always an interesting actor and he again captures the screen in this British film noir. The exterior street and building scenes often enhance Brit noirs, as opposed to lots of high contrast photography of which there is little here. Add in a couple of twists and you have a decent movie.
