While casting the film in 1997, Subhash Ghai was toying with the idea of having Fardeen Khan in Akshaye Khanna's role. But Feroz wanted Fardeen to soley concentrate on their home production " Prem Aggan". This made it easier for Subhash Ghai to finalize his starcast.
Mahima Chaudhry was supposed to enact the role of Manasi, however, Subhash Ghai dropped her after she broke the rule where she was not allowed to act for any other producer until her three film contract ended with Mukta Arts.
Subhash Ghai had initially started the film as "Shikhar" in 1995 with music by A.R Rahman, Shahrukh Khan in Akshaye Khanna's role, Jackie Shroff in Anil Kapoor's role, and Madhuri Dixit in Aishwarya Rai's role, but chose to abandon the project after the failure of 'Trimurti' and decided to make 'Pardes' instead. After the success of 'Pardes' Ghai decided to revisit the script.
