Storyline

Magoo has been enlisted as the male lead in Mrs. Sticknee's vanity production opera. On his way to the stage, he winds up in the rafters and causes havoc, cutting the various lines, standing in front of a spotlight, falling down stairs and trying to enter through a trap door the diva is standing on, and eventually crashing into a control board, triggering a snowstorm. A lightweight short, even for a Magoo

This is a Mister Magoo short done by UPA Studio. There will be spoilers ahead:

I'm a fan of Mister Magoo, but this one is a paint-by-numbers effort that's average at best if one is being charitable. Magoo is singing a male supporting role in an opera designed to be a showcase for the "talents" of Mrs. Sticknee.

Despite the credit listing here, Waldo isn't in this short (a wise move on Waldo's part). It's Magoo, Mrs. Sticknee and a bewildered stagehand trying to cope with Magoo and his antics. This is the standard riff on Magoo's nearsightedness. While it has one or two moments (the encounter with a hood ornament at the beginning of the short may be the best gag in this one) the cartoon is flat and uninteresting much of the time.

Magoo's behavior liven up an otherwise drab opera for the audience and Mrs. Sticknee goes from wanting to clobber Magoo to thanking him at the end when she realizes her opera is a success.

Shout! Factory has released an excellent box set containing all the Mister Magoo theatrical shorts and a Magoo feature film. This short is part of the set. The set is well worth buying.
