Kangaroos and Penguins at the North Pole
30 September 2012 | by (New York City) – See all my reviews

I find this a particularly fascinating cartoon from Paul Terry's studio. I have a low opinion of Mr. Terry's work, which rarely exceeded competence and all too often was aimed at small children and staying under budget. However, a couple of things that are irrelevant to the movie interest me.

One is that Farmer Alfalfa and Kiko lead a zeppelin expedition to the North Pole from Lakehurst, New Jersey. That was, of course, the place most passenger dirigibles docked on the East Coast and the next year the Hindenburg would explode there and kill passenger lighter-than-air travel to the current day. How this movie survived and was even re-released for the home market by Castle Films is a bit of a puzzle, but I suppose Mr. Terry would never pass up the opportunity to make a buck.

The other point of interest is the co-director, George Gordon. Mr. Gordon would be hired by MGM to direct cartoons in 1938, direct half a dozen over the next six years, mostly for Harman and Ising derived products and continue as a a promising talent for the next forty years, ending as a director of more than a hundred Smurf TV cartoons. In an industry that had collapsed by the 1960s, he persevered, and if he never created a great cartoon, his movie cartoons were always solid efforts.

As is this one. The gags are pretty much standard but they are well executed and there is a walrus at the North Pole. Although Wally Walrus is usually credited as appearing first in a 1944 Woody Woodpecker cartoon, THE BEACH NUT, I think this pushes it back a lot further.

SKUNKED AGAIN is not a great cartoon but it is a decent, watchable one with some interesting footnotes in animation history.
