Strange version of Robin Hood
7 December 2015 | by (Tucson AZ) – See all my reviews

This is a short in the Willie Whopper series produced by Iwerks studio. There will be spoilers ahead:

When Willie Whopper makes the claim at the start that he was once Robin Hood, it's clear you're in for some strangeness. When Robin's merry men burst out in song, it goes past strangeness.

Willie's girlfriend Mary is Marian, naturally. She's being forced to marry a rather fey Prince John. She sends a message by bird to Robin, but Prince John spots the bird and sends his own bird after hers. His bird beats Marian's bird, but Robin spots the fight and fires an arrow at the villain bird. The arrow nails the bird and then hooks the message and takes it to Robin.

Robin ditches the merry men to rescue Marian himself. He sneaks into the castle after mugging the king's jester and wearing his costume. He shows up in time to stop the marriage, eventually revealing himself as Robin Hood. After some fight scenes, he succeeds in beating the prince and his guards. He and Marian escape and the merry men break out in song yet again.

The nice thing about this short is that there are lots of throwaway gags which are often hilarious. I won't spoil those, but the charm of this cartoon is at the edges. Watch closely.

This short and all the other Willie Whopper cartoons are now available on a Blu-Ray/DVD combo from Thunderbean and the Blu-Ray is great. The cartoons look magnificent.
