Police psychiatrist tracks down mugger and murderer in this minor and flawed noir
17 May 2012 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

This noir has a decent plot, some decent staging and cinematography, and some decent acting. But it also has an inept script and some awkward acting. The director should have gone for more takes, but the budget probably prevailed.

Overall, it's watchable but one has to sit through too much awkwardness. The result is uneven. Even veteran Kent Smith looks quite uncomfortable at times in this one. James Franciscus, in his second movie, could not handle his lines well, and they weren't good to begin with. I suspect that his fellow novice in this film, George Maharis, might have handled the role better.

At times, the movie comes across like a pilot for a TV series.

Being a noir completist, I'm glad to have seen this, and it appears that the plot is engaging enough and different enough, being from an Ed McBain story, to make the movie enjoyable for many others. Just don't expect a totally smooth product. But do expect a few good night scenes in which the mugger appears and do enjoy the work of Nan Martin as a policewoman. She had sex appeal and charisma. She subsequently did a lot of TV.
