Storyline

Mr. Magoo brings in his mail opening up a flyer for a store's "83rd Anniversary Sale". Magoo thinks that the flyer is a letter from his mother about her "83rd birthday" and begins to worry that maybe he hasn't spent enough time with his mother lately. He goes to pay his mother a visit to make up for lost time but upon arriving, Mother Magoo doesn't quite appreciate Magoo's attempts at being helpful such as baking a feather duster thinking it to be a turkey dinner. So she uses psychology to eventually persuade him to go back home (at least until next year). Written by Matt Yorston <georgey@atcon.com>

Mother Magoo is a hoot!

This is a Mister Magoo short from UPA Studios. There will be spoilers ahead:

Magoo thinks it's his mother's birthday (for the fourth time this year, as mom says when she realizes he's coming) and she braces herself for her son's visit and his "help".

After gently tolerating his nearsightedness and the catastrophes that ensue, she decides that she can no longer humor him and survive the visit in one piece. So she proclaims him sick and administers "treatment designed to send him packing and headed back home-until his next visit, that is.

Mother Magoo lifts this short from the average, probably because she's a sharper foil for Magoo than Waldo, she understands the problem better and is willing to do things other characters can't or won't do for the most part. No nonsense foils who do what should be done tend to improve the shorts when and where they appear.

All the Magoo theatrical shorts and a Magoo feature film from UPA are now available on an excellent box set from Shout! Factory. It's well worth getting and this short itself is very good. Recommended.
