Storyline

The near-sighted Mr. McGoo takes his duties as an Air Raid Warden, in the civil-defense, cold-war/iron curtain days of the 1950s, seriously. When he stumbles across the premiere of a new science-fiction movie at a theatre, he thinks his town has just been invaded by outer-space aliens. He takes the on-screen activities as part of the attack and goes through all the civil-defense steps to save the audience. Written by Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>

Magoo the civil defense warden

This is a Mister Magoo short released by UPA Studios. There will be spoilers ahead:

Magoo, in defiance of all rational thought, has been appointed a civil defense warden. He mistakes a science fiction movie premiere for an alien invasion, which makes for a very long and strange evening for an usher and the audience at the theater.

Truth be told, most of the gags are just average at best. Jim Backus does a good job voicing Magoo, as usual, but it's a rather mundane outing for a Magoo short. One or two gags work, to a degree. But it's mostly as predictable as a Magoo cartoon can be.

Shout! Factory has released a box set containing all the Magoo theatricals and a Magoo feature film. The box set is excellent. This short is worth seeing once.
