This is a misfire and I think I know why

Warning: Spoilers
This is a Mister Magoo short from the UPA Studios. There will be spoilers ahead:

This is your basic Magoo plot-Magoo has a date to a costume ball, a ballerina named Fifi. He winds up at the zoo and mistakes an ostrich for Fifi. They go to the ball, the ostrich winds up wearing a pearl necklace which causes the house detective to think she and Magoo are thieves.

The house detective attacks the ostrich, Magoo comes to his "lady's" aid, a fight begins and the ostrich beats the house detective up. Magoo drops his "date" off at the zoo, an old gag about ostriches is made and the short ends.

The problem with this short is that part of the fun is the reactions of others who realize something just isn't right. Nobody realizes that Magoo's date is an ostrich! They just assume she's a woman in an ostrich costume. There are precious few laughs to be had here. Waldo isn't in this one. Perhaps if he were, someone might have noticed the incongruity.

The Magoo theatrical shorts and a Magoo feature film are now available in a DVD box set released by Shout! Factory. The set is excellent and well worth getting.
