Sings nicely
TheLittleSongbird29 July 2022
1950 was a less inconsistent year for Terrytoons than most, with almost all of the batch ranging between mediocre and decent. None of the cartoons in the batch are great (none of the Terrytoons cartoons overall are, though the best Heckle and Jeckle cartoons came close), but there also aren't really any weak ones from that year either. Which is an improvement over most of the previous years and the succeeding ones. A few mediocre ones, but even they had redeeming merits.

'If Cats Could Sing' is one of the solid in between cartoons. Quite a lot of good things, but also a few not so good things that have in truth been done worse in other Terrytoons cartoons. The premise is nothing new, neither in Terrytoons or animation, but have often gotten a lot of enjoyment out of it and many cartoons that have it are still very enjoyable. Despite not being a great cartoon by any stretch, 'If Cats Could Sing' has a good deal to enjoy and doesn't do very much to disgrace the premise.

Am going to begin with mentioning the good things. Two elements are particularly good and are worth more than one mark each (1 and a half). One is the animation, the studio's most improved component. The ambitious, elaborate detail in the backgrounds is on display, the colours are a mix of vibrant and atmospheric and fluidity of drawing and movement has improved such a lot for the studio. The haunted house setting has a real eeriness to it. Even better is the music, it is beautifully and cleverly orchestrated and arranged, is terrific fun to listen to and the lively energy is present throughout, doing so well with adding to the action.

The characters have lively personalities, they are all the types seen before many times but their zany, infectious personalities make up for that and did appreciate the effort to make them individual from each other, which Terrytoons often failed in in their earlier years. There are plenty of amusing moments in a cartoon that is not short changed when it comes to gags and there is a good deal of energy later on.

Having said all of that, it is best to forget the plot. Because there isn't really one and any signs of any is formulaic and at times repetitive. While most of the gags work, though in an amusing way rather than hilarious, others suffer from being corny and from having too much of a recycled feel.

Did feel that the momentum sagged towards the end when the cartoons began to run out of ideas and concluded on a predictable and slightly too easily resolved note.

Concluding, decent but not much special, only the animation and music are properly outstanding. 6/10.

A fairly good cartoon for a Terrytoon
llltdesq4 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is a one shot cartoon produced by Terrytoons. There will be spoilers ahead:

This Terrytoon is an opera. All the dialog is sung. A lot of the Mighty Mouse shorts are operas. As Terrytoons go, this one is actually fairly good.

The short begins on a clock as it chimes at midnight. Cats spring up from all sorts of places to converge on an opera. A female cat tries to get out, only to have a bulldog roughly toss her into her place. The lead male cat singing is her beloved. But before we get to the opera, the orchestra tunes up, the conductor takes the podium and leads the orchestra. You definitely don't want to make a mistake here, as the conductor has harsh methods of dealing with errors!

The musical gags are nicely handled, even if most of them are fairly standard gags. Probably the best gag is when the lead male cat takes his lady fair a gift mouse on a platter. The gag is rather funny and a bit unexpected. A nice change of pace.

The bulldog is the villain and he and the lead singer have the expected duel, with the predictable outcome. All's well that ends well and like that. Not an earthshaking short, but a nice and pleasant way to kill six or so minutes.

Well worth watching.

Would They Sound Like This Terrytoon?

Every once in a Paul Terry would let house composer Phil Scheub do some opera work. The best remembered examples involved Mighty Mouse rescuing Pearl Pureheart from Oil Can Harry -- or maybe the other way around. In this one, however, it's moved up a notch: the cats put on an operatic performance for the female cat, while her daddy, the bulldog, disapproves. Same voice artists, though.

Whatever the level, at least this one runs through its gags well: nothing breath-taking, but solidly amusing. Terry's staff was always competent, even if he rarely allowed them much leeway. He does here, and it's a good one.

Wonderfully goofy, operatic Terrytoon

I thought this cartoon was a very nice, completely enjoyable little musical from Paul Terry, and it is now another favorite. Its campy nature is delightfully amusing.

The story is basically an operatic take on a cat "singing" to a female cat. But her annoyed, sleep-deprived owner tries to keep her away from him. Well, in the beginning, every cat in the city was going to a kitty-cat opera, and the female lead wanted to go, but her owner constrained her inside.

So that is all I have to say about this cartoon, and I love this cartoon way better than the Warner Bros. Cartoon "Notes to You" and its color remake, "Back Alley Oproar." Overall, I love this cartoon, campiness and all.
