An Obscure Series
15 January 2015 | by (New York City) – See all my reviews

This very rare Willy Whopper cartoon turned up on the Cartoon Research site. Apparently Thunderbean will be issuing a DVD of these from fine-grain elements. I'm glad. Willy was, so far as most fans are concerned, Ub Iwerks' B series after he left Disney. I always thought Flip the Frog was his attempt to replicate Mickey Mouse; after he ran through all the small-town gags, there was nothing left. Willy, who told tall tales, offered a real character and a wider range of stories.

Like this story: Willy and his girl friend go sailing and annoy Neptune, who sinks them. Underwater they meet a series of weird and frightening images (I particularly like the handling of the Devil Fish) and fight a peg-legged Davy Jones.

Willy won't be to everyone's taste -- it is, after all, considered the lesser series. However, if you give it a try with an open mind, you just might enjoy it greatly.
