Storyline

John Smith is a fugitive on the run, all because of the suppressive childhood inflicted on him by his mother. When he was two years old she had tricked him into exchanging his crib for a bed and later, she brought home a baby brother when he was expecting a sister. John has had enough and is running away from home but has to stop at the curb as his mother won't let 6-year-old John cross the street. Written by Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>

Cute short with an interesting if obvious premise

This is essentially a one shot, though somewhat reminiscent of The Family Circus. There will be very mild spoilers ahead:

This concerns one John Smith, "fugitive". John is the narrator. It must be stated at the outset that my sympathies are not with John. They are with everyone and everything which must contend with John (particularly the family dog).

John is whining and obnoxious, totally self absorbed and petty. John's tale of his woe and agony would irritate Tiny Tim and drive him to box John's ears. This is a cute cartoon, but John overstays his welcome by a considerable amount. The ending of the short is particularly good, though John's bag is left behind when it comes time for him to go home.

This short is included on a three disc DVD box set of UPA Jolly Frolics shorts. The set itself is excellent and this short is worth watching at least once. Recommended.
