Bargain Counter Attack is one nearly highly amusing Little Lulu cartoon
18 June 2009 | by (Baton Rouge, La.) – See all my reviews

Having first seen this Famous Studios Little Lulu cartoon 20 years ago on a Goodtimes tape of 4 public domain cartoons, I found myself watching Bargain Counter Attack again this morning when it ended up on Mark Evanier's site as linked from YouTube. In this one, Lulu goes to a department store and tells the floorwalker she wants to exchange her doll for something else. That floorwalker politely gives her the exchange slip. Then after she leaves, that same floorwalker shouts at a slow-walking employee already carrying several items and gives him several more! So anything Lulu does that flabbergasts the floorwalker-like say, skating on ice cubes taken from the refrigerator or skiing on the escalator handles-seems like just deserts for him. And it's amusing when, after he sees her returning several items to him, Lulu says, "It's not what I want, Mister." Though I do wonder about that scene when he offers a baby carriage to her since she wouldn't have a use for that if it's her doll she wants to exchange. Not as hilarious as a Warner Bros. or M-G-M cartoon of the same period. Still, Bargain Counter Attack is worth a look if you're a vintage animation buff. P.S. Jackson "Bluto" Beck is the voice of the floorwalker.
