i am unsure what the message of this show is. is it supposed to be a darkly satirical view on how depressing things are in the UK? or are we supposed to laugh at the lead protagonist eric's misfortune? it can't be both because if we're supposed to find eric's suffering amusing then that would just contradict the idea of this show satirizing what's wrong with how things work in Britain.
the "humour" is this show is so unfunny, i was very confused about which scenes are supposed to be funny and which ones are not. eric's misfortune always seems to be played for laughs and everyone around treats him like garbage and bad luck only seems to happen to him. ummm.... haha?
the characters in this show are extremely unlikable to say the least. we have the "perfects" family (yes, that's they're surname) who are rich, snobby and sadistic as they like to pick on eric at every chance they can get for not being as "peerfect" as them. then there is eric's female co-worker, his is lazy, incompetent and very rude to eric and never bothers helping him when he's in a sticky situation. there is also eric's boss, who is an aggressive, angry and nasty to eric for the slightest reasons ever. then there's eric's Portuguese cleaning lady, who is always drunk, useless and irresponsible. and finally there's eric's ex wife, who is arguably the worst of the bunch. she dumped eric for another guy, and yet she still constantly harasses him over the phone is an extremely unbearable voice. eric himself is not a very likable protagonist and is very whiny. sure, he's not an arsehole like the other characters, and he has a good damn reason to be whiny, however he is also so weak willed and wimpy, it's difficult to like him either.
no likable characters and humour that is barely funny. what is the point?
stressed eric is an ugly and depressing cartoon that will leave nothing but a nasty taste in your mouth.
