BBC extends 'Postman Pat'

20 July 2004 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

LONDON -- Entertainment Rights said Monday that it has won a re-commission by the BBC of its animated Postman Pat franchise even before the first of the new episodes of the children's television series has begun airing on the U.K. broadcaster. Postman Pat first aired in 1981, but a year ago Entertainment Rights -- after a re-commission by the BBC -- began making 26 new episodes that are set to air this autumn on BBC2. When the BBC saw the first episodes in the new series, they signed up for another 26 episodes. "I think the stories about helping and community and feeling safe are perhaps more relevant than ever," Entertainment Rights CEO Jane Smith said in an interview. "This is a brand that is very trusted by parents and by the BBC." Entertainment Rights is making the new Postman Pat series in association with Manchester-based animation specialist Cosgrove Hall Films. "With the re-commission we are much better positioned for the U.S. market, and we will be starting conversations with the U.S. broadcasters in the autumn," Smith said. The series has been seen in 65 countries outside the U.S. »
