"Picnics are Fun" finds Hattie taking her two dolls for a picnic in the 'Country"---the roof of her apartment building where the trees, flowers and greenery grow only in her fertile imagination; the second offering, "Dino's Serenade", has Ham & His World Players doing a sketch about a strolling musician, the girl he loves and the villain who steals her away. The last of four Ham and Hattie cartoons from UPA

This is a UPA Jolly Frolics short. There will be spoilers ahead:

This is the final Ham and Hattie short, a UPA series featuring two separate cartoons with Hamilton Ham in one and a little girl named Hattie in the other.

Hattie is typically the first half of the shorts and that's the case here, with Picnics Are Fun. Each half has its own song, though to be honest, most of them are largely unimpressive. The song in Picnics Are Fun is rather bland, though the short itself has some nice touches, such as the name on the bag of potato chips (Mother Magoo's Chips) and a rather unusual bug. The Hattie short has its moments, but is unexceptional.

The Ham half of this one, Dino's Serenade, is only marginally better. Ham plays Dino, a violinist who sets up a date from scratch, only to have her stolen from him by another man. The song is actually the weakest song out of the four Ham songs from the series. All in all, this is the weakest of the four cartoons in the Ham and Hattie series, which started out strongly with Trees and Jamaica Daddy only to peter out.

This short is on a three disc box set of Jolly Frolics cartoons. The set is excellent. This short is worth watching once.
