It's tight, hilarious and beautifully presented.
"I have never looked at an egg and thought it was a f*****g BRAIN." "If I was gonna legalize a drug, it wouldn't have been alcohol." Brilliant. He just splayed hypocrisy in two.
Without Hicks, the Nineties would have been a mistake. He was a dreamer. Not the only one, but there are so many conformists these days that I weep daily.
Some wait for the second coming of Jesus... I wait for Goatboys Comeback Special...
"One Night Stand" is available as part of the DVD, "Bill Hicks Live - Satirist, Social Critic, Stand-Up Comedian".
I've caught this episode of "One Night Stand" a couple of times over the years on HBO Comedy and now it's available on DVD. I must say this stand up performance from Bill Hicks is just fabulously funny! From start to finish Hicks is never at a moment of losing his words! This was in 1991 when Bill was at his peak and high point even the opening prologue of him at the airport is funny. Anyway Bill performs at the Old Vic Theatre in Chicago and I just love his rapid fire southern style of fast paced tongue and comedic wit! This stand up performance of only 30 minutes covers topics such as smoking, alcohol, pot use and the one catchy line about eggs and your brain on drugs. I love the way he closes out with the pornography speech that it's simple magazines, movies, and advertising doesn't cause so much sexual behavior, but it's nature and it's only natural! As all slogans and products and commercials have sexual images, and he tells it like it is all just a fact of nature! As always raw, outspoken, and unafraid this stand up was one of HBO's best. Bill was well on his way to becoming the best comedian alive, it's a shame he went before his time because his future was so bright it's so odd the world took him on.
Bill Hicks was not your average stand-up comic. He was full of
insightful social commentary and was not afraid to air his
nonconformist viewpoints. Somewhere between Hunter Thompson and Huey
Newton, he was a genuine visionary in the world of comedy and
This special includes some of his greatest bits, though you may have heard others over the years try to make them their own. I would highly recommend to any thoughtful person, whether a comedy fan or not, to watch this if you have the opportunity. You can find it on Google Video and on Youtube and I know that is included on at least one Bill Hicks DVD. I recommend looking for it online as I don't know if there's enough of a Bill Hicks fan base now, twelve years after his death, for there to be an abundant supply of the DVDs that have been released.
