Baseball antics
1947 was a less prolific year for Gandy Goose and Sourpuss Cat, most of that year being dominated by Mighty Mouse (again) and when one of Terrytoons' better overall theatrical series Heckle and Jeckle started to properly take off. Although their cartoons are a mixed bag, with a few very good and a few are very mediocre, Gandy and Sourpuss are not bad characters (though Sourpuss is more consistently characterised) and their chemistry is fun.
Which is obvious here in 'Mexican Baseball'. Although one can see a fair share of familiar Terrytoons plot tropes and cartoons centered sports was not unfamiliar territory for the studio (done a lot actually with variable success), 'Mexican Baseball' was surprisingly quite enjoyable for somebody expecting a running out of ideas and corny cartoon in all honesty. It also does Gandy, Sourpuss and their chemistry justice and as far as 1947 Terrytoons cartoons go, it's towards the better end.
'Mexican Baseball' is far from perfect sure. There is nothing original here on the story front, with a lot of it being predictable. The ending, which was also too convenient and slightly abrupt, is particularly easily foreseeable long before it happens with a final gag that agreed is essentially a retread.
Some of the gags are very standard, with variations of them happening in other baseball cartoons as well, and on the corny side.
However, there is so much to love about 'Mexican Baseball'. That the animation fares very well here was not a surprise as this aspect had come on enormously by this point with Terrytoons. It is nicely detailed, lively and colourful without being garish, the animation on the bulls stands out. Again, the music, the thing that was the most consistently good thing from the very beginning with Terrytoons, is a big strength. It is beautifully and cleverly orchestrated and arranged, is terrific fun to listen to and the lively energy is present throughout, doing so well with adding to the action.
Gandy and Sourpuss work entertainingly as a duo. Personally prefer Sourpuss as a character, a more interesting personality and one that appeals more, but Gandy in general had come on significantly since he was first introduced overtime and that is obvious here, his personality is a lot more and it isn't an annoying or dull one in my view. The bulls are great formidable opponents, provide some genuine tension within the game and bag the best moments. While the story is thin and predictable, it does have a good deal of energy and the spirit of baseball is captured well.
Terrytoons do not often fare well when it comes to their gag count and the quality of the gags, too many of their cartoons have too few gags and ones that are not very funny and too overused. There is a quite high gag count here and while originality is not a strong suit here and corniness is obvious, they are also genuinely amusing and a few of the more visual-oriented ones are quite clever. The cartoon is indeed strange but in this case not in a bad way.
Concluding, pretty decent. 7/10
