Magpies For Sale
Mannie Davis is in charge of this typically good Heckle And Jeckle cartoon set in a department store as they fight the boss and janitor -- both dogs.
Davis was probably Paul Terry's best long-term director and the department store setting is a standard choice for comedy shorts back to the silent days -- Chaplin's THE FLOORWALKER is an early example of the setting that should be familiar to movie buffs. There are many items on sale that can be used for comedy props and some of the typical ones here are a convertible sofa (in place of a Murphy bed), an escalator and the sets of dishes. There is nothing groundbreaking, but the pacing of the gags is well maintained and very amusing.
