The production ran out of money with only two-thirds of the script filmed. Funds were so scarce that the cast and crew had to sneak out of the hotel they were staying in, having nothing left to pay with.
As part of his compensation, Dean Stockwell had requested a supply of Cuban cigars. When he arrived at the filming location and discovered that there were no cigars, he threatened to return home and had to be begged by the filmmakers to remain.
A number of chickens were killed while filming a battle scene. The scene was described in the screenplay as comedic, with chickens flying about humorously, and the filmmakers shot it by having three live birds thrown over the edge of a cliff. None of the chickens survived.
