Dud's girlfriend Mamie wants an ice cream cone, but Dud is broke. He rushes home, steals a coin bank and chops it open with an ax, only to find that he's also split in half the one coin inside. Dud's mother sees this and spanks him. That night, Dud takes his dog and runs away into the woods. He imagines his mother finding him the next morning, weeping and reproaching herself for being so hard on him. Then he imagines finding buried treasure. These fantasies become nightmarish when he thinks he sees a bear, a demon and a laughing skull. It's morning now, and Dud returns home with his dog, only to suffer another spanking from his mother. The dog says, "Guess I might as well start training for what's coming to me," and hits his own behind several times on a fence. Written by J. Spurlin

User Reviews

simple but adorable

This is a very early cartoon and of course it isn't the quality of later toons that have color, sound and a big studio behind them. But, despite it being a pretty simple cartoon, it's a lot of fun to watch and quite charming.

Dud is a little boy out with his sweetie, Mamie. She wants some candy so Dud sneaks home to steal it from his granny's piggy bank. He gets caught and a whipping. Later that night, he and his dog run away. At this point, my favorite part of the cartoon begins, as Dud dreams of all the wonderful things that he thinks will happen. He imagines finding gold and becoming the idol of Mamie and making his granny regret being so mean to him! But, his plans don't last as his imagination kicks in and he's so scared out in the wild that he runs home. The final scene shows him once again getting a lickin'--this time for running away from home.

Despite its child abuse-like theme, this is a cute and engaging film and worth a look.
