Storyline

Photography student François leads a mostly carefree life in Québec, spending most of his time hanging out with and photographing his girlfriend, Geneviève. That life changes after his father, Eugène, the family breadwinner, gets laid off from his job at American owned J.W. Goldwater and Sons, where he's worked for twenty years. Eugène and many of his fellow employee's jobs have been mechanized, and that particular factory sold. The men plan on holding continual solidarity protests - which includes not allowing other union employees to go to work - until they get their jobs back. Aspiring photographer François wants to document the protests on film. Believing the situation at Goldwater a systemic problem fostered by big business supportive provincial government policy, a small faction of the union, led by two men named Pierre and Fernand, want to co-opt François as part of their team to work clandestinely to get the third place Independence Party, led by Pierre Lemoyne, into power at ... Trivia

The film is very loosely based on the 1970 October Crisis in Québec. The character Pierre Lemoyne (the leader of the independence party) is based on the actual founder of the Parti Québécois, René Lévesque ("Le moine" means "the monk" while "L'évêque" means "the bishop"). See more »

A Variation of the October 1970 crisis...
7 May 2005 | by (Montreal, Canada) – See all my reviews

This movie, shot in the 70s, at the time Quebec cinema was revolving into gratuitous sex movies, corny comedies, correct family dramas and political movies, belongs to the latter category...

This story of an innocent would-be photograph and his girlfriend, embroiled into a terrorist group due to a layoff of employees including his father and being arrested illegally by the police is well told despite some flaws.

This terrorist group goes from kidnapping key politicians and scrapping electoral rallies, as well as catching a minister of Parliament in a compromising position. When they kill accidentally three people due to a mistaken bomb scare, they are targeted...

In some way, we see that power is still under the hands of the wealthy and powerful, as well as using the police to stop whatever threat comes out...

However, this movie seems to be shot like a TV movie, so it does not look that bad, however the images seemed way far from the improved cinematography that we enjoy today in Quebec made films...

For the rest, a good way to see how Montreal was in pre-Olympic games days (1974). And see some great actors which most of them, unfortunately, are not with us anymore...
