Emma Farley casts her eye over the latest happenings from the indie movie scene...
Sure, the awards season culminates in the Academy Awards which are a few months off yet, but anticipation builds up early with festival and critics awards. With a year of big indie releases, including Somewhere, The Kids Are All Right, Blue Valentine and Winter’s Bone, hopes are high that these films can maintain their buzz.
This week’s indie news
The nominations for the 2010 Gotham Independent Film Awards were announced earlier this week. With Black Swan, Blue Valentine, Let Me In, Winter’s Bone and The Kids Are All Right competing for Best Feature, could this hint at possible nods come Oscar time? Last year the number of films nominated for Best Picture was extended to ten instead of the usual five, so indies could start to receive the kind of coverage they deserve.
I love Whitney Port’s unexpected summertime look, here’s how you can get it too!
Whitney Port looked perfectly punk rock at the Elle magazine Women In Music issue celebration on June 9 in New York City. “I love this look as an alternative to the more obvious rocker look of black smudgy eyes,” says celebrity makeup artist Amy Nadine Rosenberg who created Whitney’s look for the night. “A vamp lip gives you an edge but by pairing it with a soft, golden eye, you make it pretty enough for summer,” Amy explains. “For a little extra drama, I added a hard contoured cheek like the Robert Palmer video girls from ‘Simply Irresistible,’” she says.

Britain's Princess Diana reportedly had an affair with Robert Palmer. The princess - who died alongside her lover Dodi Al Fayed in a Paris car crash in 1997 - allegedly had a fling with the late singer, which is thought to have inspired his 1988 hit 'Simply Irresistible'. A friend of Robert - who died in Paris in 2003 of a sudden heart attack - posted comments on a website, which has since been removed, claiming Diana was very much "in love" with the star. The friend wrote on iamundercover.com: "It was an extramarital affair that could have hurt a lot of people. Diana was in love with Robert and wanted to spend every second with him. "The affair was »
Isla Fisher may stay fairly secretive about life with her beau Sacha Baron Cohen, but on the big screen, she's preparing to Kiss and Tell. The actress has signed on for the romantic comedy which follows a woman (Fisher) with the power to tell if the men she dates have long-term relationship potential just by kissing them. Cutesy rom-coms are nothing new to Fisher, but this one sounds particularly apt for cheese. Adding the element of magic to this genre hasn't exactly worked well in years past (the recent When in Rome or Simply Irresistible come to mind), but if anything can compensate for a potentially bad plot device, it's Fisher's charm. Now, I'm just curious to see the list of leading men that she gets to lock lips with - maybe Will Arnett? »
