Since 1995, even though the original setting (the title gym, then a high school campus, and others) have changed over the course of the years, the title of "Malhação" ("fitness") remains to this day.

The "Múltipla Escolha" high school setting lasted for ten years until it the series was completely rebooted in 2009. Sérgio Hondjakoff (as "Bigheaded"), Giselle Frade (as "Drica") portrayed popular characters in this period.

Priscila Fantin, Mário Frias, Daniele Suzuki, Fernanda Souza, Graziella Schimitt and Rômulo Arantes Neto, from the high school years, returned after the reboot portraying new roles; as did Sílvia Pfeifer and Danton Mello from the original "gym" seasons.

André Marques is the only cast member to return from the original series (the 1995 gym setting) portraying a same character. He reprised his popular role of Mocotó in 2012.

Fernanda Vasconcellos and 'Thiago Rodrigues' portrayed the main romantic couple in Season Twelve and twice again in Rede Globo's Páginas da vida (2006) and Tempos Modernos (2010).

Fernanda Souza (Season Six) and Giselle Frade (Seasons 8-11) were both "chiquititas" from Chiquititas Brasil (1997). Manuela do Monte (Season Ten) would later star as their "mother" Carol in Chiquititas (2014).

Bárbara Borges (Season Nine), Graziella Schimitt (Season Eleven) and Monique Alfradique were all Xuxa Meneghel's stangehands ("paquitas") before their roles in this series. Juliana Silveira (Season Nine) stagehanded the similar Brazilian TV hostess Angélica.

The series originally had mostly young adults playing underage characters. After 2012, the series featured a much younger cast following SBT's hit series Carrossel (2012) and Chiquititas (2014).

The series' premiere has one scene involving two underage characters having sex, where Gisele Fraga's buttocks are seen. They are caught by the actual minor Bruno de Luca. Rio de Janeiro's Juvenile Court requested the episode's script from Rede Globo for analysis and, unanswered, fined the network.
