- Jason is a small-time criminal and con artist. His misdemeanours range from petty scams to outright robberies. He is also manipulative and domineering. But his girlfriend Cheryl is so desperate to become a recognized artist that she willingly assists in his rackets. The big carrot that Jason dangles in front of her is a gallery showing of her art. One evening, while fleeing the scene of a variety store robbery, Cheryl mistakenly thinks she has slammed the getaway car into Donald, a drunken philosopher. Cheryl thinks she's almost killed him, but Donald, who has a penchant for inept suicide attempts, believes she has saved his life and could be his guardian angel. Their lives become inextricably linked.—Anonymous
- Lisa and Jason are lovers, small time crooks and con artists. In addition to their joint scams, Jason steals cars on the side for a "friend" named Leo. Jason seems to do these acts to show his superiority over others, including Lisa. Lisa, on the other hand, aspires to be a serious artist and stays with Jason in part because his sister Carla is an art gallery curator, and he has promised Lisa that he will get her a showing at Carla's gallery. As Lisa drives the getaway car from their most recent robbery, she runs over a drunk, or so she believes. In reality, she didn't hit the drunk, but he is passed out on the street. As she tries to help him, the drunk awakens and sees her face surrounded by a glow of light. Because of his life situation, he believes she's an angel, his guardian angel. As she helps him, she learns that his name is Donald, that he believes in a natural equilibrium in life, that he seems not to have any money issues but doesn't seem to work, that he goes on a bender every night, and that he is suicidal. Lisa sees that she can take advantage of his belief that she's an angel, and leaves Jason, by whose control she feels she is being smothered, and stays with Donald. Eventually, Lisa believes that she really can be Donald's savior, and he in turn can be her support in leading a life on the straight and narrow. However, Jason won't let Lisa go quite that easily, and her relationship with Donald could be affected if he finds out that she is no angel in every sense of the word. Getting away from the secret that each is facing could be both Lisa and Donald's salvation.—Huggo
