The crew of a huge cruise ship awaits its new captain, Captain Jim Kennedy III, who left his US Navy career early for personal reasons. As if this transit weren't hard enough, his ex immediately forces upon him the care for their 15 year-old son Danny, a problem kid with a juvenile record; the captain orders Chief Purser Will Sanders to watch the boy permanently. The new Ship's Doctor John Morgan is seasick even before they sail. Josh Walters was stood up by his fiancée, so he takes their honeymoon with his mate Luke Staley, which makes girls believe they are gay, and flock to the hunks, but...

He wrongfully worries that's even harder for Danny, and welcomes overbooking means his son will have to bunk with him, but the kid has no trouble amusing himself, even steals a key from the new also ex-Navy assistant purser to spend time with a passengers daughter- as it turns out, the captains former love's. Bar Manager Paolo Kaire gets on great with congressman Warren McMahon, his disarmed bodyguard with Security Chief Camille Hunter.

Eager to keep his mischievous son Danny occupied, the captain assigns him the assistantship to the ship's photographer, which is right up his alley if only it can be made interesting. Tristan Reedy and Juliette Titlebaum, a young couple about to marry, booked the cruise to establish a sexual reference base by studying the mating of humans just as anthropologists would do with any other species, namely doing it with attractive crew members, as if they had no emotional baggage, but of course nature has its jealous way. Chief Purser Will Sanders is elated to spend some time in her cabin with incognito singer Johari Mayfield. The photographer points out to Danny the paparazzi-prices for photos of incognito stars, and Paolo vents Will has a mystery woman... The captain thinks his teenage boy needs to have 'the talk' but doesn't quite feel up to it. Buddy Pomus is drawn to and disgusted by his ex (twice!), who seems to have blown it with her current partner Scott.

The Sun Princess has its most international passenger list ever. Tom hopes to save his sinking marriage by returning to the cruise ship where he and his wife Janet met, but she doesn't cooperate. Student nurse Mary Dutton is about to graduate and leave for Jamaica, but meets ship mechanic Pete Dougherty, who loves her enough at first sight to quit after eight years just to follow her; Chief Purser Will Sanders helps him, but then she tells she's a nun in training. Contest cruise prize winners Larry Cranston and his wife, granny and sister-in-law are a grumpy bunch and insist on meeting and being photographed with the captain, who has to jump after Larry -who can't swim- in the pool and thus catches a cold; Audrey wants far too much attention from the captain, Larry knows her too well. Single mother-to-be Penelope Michaels gets talking to Ship's Doctor John Morgan, but he lacks confidence to deliver her baby so Security Chief Camille Hunter assists him, and that's no luxury since it's unexpectedly triplet boys. Sid and June Glacken celebrate 40 years of marriage; a program seats them with Tom and Janet, who can use some confidential advice from long experience, but as they don't keep it from each-other rock the anniversary couple's boat... Danny just enjoys photographing sexy girls sunbathing.

Jim refuses to admit that he can't dance, then secretly takes lessons from Camille. Paolo considers giving up his career to marry the older woman he has been dating. Danny is assigned to kitchen duty and plays a practical joke on the bad tempered chef. John tries to improve his bedside manner around young patients. Two friends decide to have each other after failing to set each other up with someone else.

Danny is happy his dad finally invited his ma Pat Kennedy on board to celebrate the kids birthday together, less about the endless naval lessons. The captain approves chief purser Will Sanders' application to be transferred to the cruiser line's flagship, so junior purser Donald Griswald, like the captain ex-U.S. Navy, is assigned to observe Sanders before succeeding to the post. Camille also gets a transfer to the Grand Princess, later even ship's doctor John Morgan, which rains on Danny's party parade. Donald's dry pragmatism is inappropriate on a fun cruise. Mother Pat asks Danny to return with her. Bar manager Paolo Kaire is furious that his father Manuel Kaire, who walked out on him aged ten and his mother, is on board and refuses to get to know him, even after a talk with Doctor John Morgan; explaining to Danny parents are just people makes him reconsider. Passengers Charles and Doreen didn't fit in a singles group, but get on together great, till kissing drives her away because of the padded flat chest she came to test out; when she has the courage to show him, he divulges his own secret... Cruise Director Suzanne Zimmerman joins the leaving list. The captain learns Paolo's mother was the adulterer, but dad spared him that knowledge when she walked out on him, and tells Paolo... Seeing Danny happy on board makes his ma reconsider what's best for him... The transferees also have a surprise...

John begins a romance with a friend from his medical school days, but soon discovers that she has a terminal illness. Camille is surprised to see her estranged father aboard, whom she has not seen for eight years. She tries to stop him scheming to con her friends out of their money.. Will tricks Paolo into spending time with a beautiful but irritating woman that Will knew as a kid. Nicole helps a man plan the perfect marriage proposal, but the engagement ring (hidden in a dessert) is accidentally delivered to Paolo's date.

When a hypnotist is booked for the cruise but insists that the cruise line pay his asking price. Camille convinces him to do one show and he hypnotizes several of the crew. When he learns that the line is not going pay his price he leaves and the crew is still hypnotized, so they act strangely which makes doing their job difficult. And he also hypnotizes a young girl who's mother is a friend of Nicole's to believe that her doll can talk to her because she has a problem which she is not willing to tell anyone.
