A pretty swell though unfortunately inferior sequel to Sex and Fury
26 November 2009 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

Sex and Fury was a truly brilliant film and Inoshika Ocho a marvellous character so it was with some joy that I picked up its sequel, it sadly does not reach the heights of the former though still ends up pretty decent in its own right. Teruo Ishii directs here and his sterling work drives the film, it oozes with style from the start and even its slower or weaker moments are coolly woven. Sadly IMDb does not list the composer of the score for it is terrific, always evocative, sometimes jazzy and at different turns pacy, suspenseful or simply groovy. Add in the quality cinematography and neat use of lighting and colored glass and it all becomes a feast for eyes and ears. The film is also sleazier than the original, with ample nudity and warped sexual indignities, there is often a good demented feel. Inevitable really, since the film is concerned with gang rivalry and drug smuggling using the private parts of hookers. Stylings and nudity aside I had some problems with this one. The film isn't terribly well paced, its convoluted plotting is supported by some interesting characters but shifts around a lot between people and regrettably spends lesser time with Inoshika Ocho. Its quite a drawback really, as Reiko Ike is truly a commanding and beautiful actress and perhaps inevitably the pleasure falls a little in her absence. Also the film has a fairly sharp drop in violence from its predecessor (though it definitely has its moments), it also isn't especially suspenseful, so the sleaze fills the gap of real thrills. The sleaze is good, even pretty funny at times but the film feels lacking. Fortunately the climax does feature a terrific and bloody fight with numerous combatants which does go a good way towards soothing earlier problems. Thus it all works out OK as a viewing experience taking into account the sleaze and sweet handling by Teruo Ishii, despite undeniable problems and its worth a watch for fans of the original or general enthusiasts of old school Japanese exploitation. Happily recommended then, just be prepared for its hiccups and don't expect the dizzy heights of the first film.
