Oswald in Mexico
TheLittleSongbird12 June 2017
Despite Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and his cartoons being popular and well received at the time, they have been vastly overshadowed over time by succeeding animation characters. It is a shame as, while not cartoon masterpieces, they are fascinating for anybody wanting to see what very old animation looked like.

Sadly, while Lantz and Oswald have done worse cartoons, 'Mexico' despite the different setting of Mexico, is a lacklustre at best efforts. Some of their cartoons are good and some even very good, 'Mexico' isn't one of them.

Not everything comes off badly. Music has its usual energy, and the gestures, expressions and movements for Oswald are remarkably natural. Oswald is endearing and Pete is a fun foil.

A couple of the gags are amusing but not much more than that. Mexico is a beautiful and unique setting for an Oswald cartoon.

Unfortunately there is also a lot wrong. The animation is pretty crude and lacking in smoothness and detail at times. Oswald's material is too lacking for him to carry the cartoon well. Sound has also been more resonant.

Story, even for an Oswald cartoon, is thinner than ice, merely an excuse to string along the gags. The fight takes up too much time of 'Mexico' and the outcome is incredibly predictable, one can see it coming from a mile away. It is a shame that almost all the gags are not funny and pretty drawn out and predictable. There is a real lack of energy too.

Overall, lacklustre. 4/10 Bethany Cox
