Sergio Leone was one of the writers, but this work came after his ground-breaking westerns. The dialogue seems a bit strained as it tries to fit the mouth movements of the actors. That is the main drawback. The filming -- true to the Italians -- is exquisite. Costumes are wonderful, and the decadence is also excellent.
There is some Christian-bashing in that they are portrayed as assassins, which would be Leone's communist side showing through, and is also what accounts for the negative votes on this site.
A great film? No. A pretty good watch? Yes.
