Charming and witty
TheLittleSongbird16 August 2012
I like Burbank Films Australia's animations in general, and while not among my favourites like Wind in the Willows, Peter Pan and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, it is one of their better animations and much better than Don Quixote, The Odyssey and Prisoner of Zenda. The story is condensed to a mere 50 minutes or so but it is charming and skips along nicely without feeling rushed. The animation has moments of crude character design but has fluidity, colour and detail for the backgrounds. The music gives a strong sense of adventure, while the sword play is energetic and the dialogue witty. The characters are not as complex as they are in Dumas' story(which is very good but I am more receptive to Man in the Iron Mask and especially The Three Musketeers) but they are interesting and engaging. The voice work is solid enough.

All in all, a good animated version. 8/10 Bethany Cox
