Carl Macek was a pioneer in the field of anime, serving as producer and story editor for the popular Robotech series from the mid-1980s.

Macek was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 21, 1951.  He worked at California State University Fullerton as a librarian of popular culture, and co-editor of  1979’s McGill’s Survey of the Cinema and Film Noir-An Encyclopedic Reference to the American Style (1979).  He also wrote the book The Art of Heavy Metal: Animation for the Eighties.  He became involved with anime in 1985 when he revised and edited three separate Japanese anime series, The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, The Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeada, into a three-generation Robotech Wars storyline.  The popular series was produced in 1985 by Harmony Gold in association with Tatsunoko Prod. To the stars and beyond: a tribute to Carl Macek

Jason salutes Carl Macek, who died at the weekend. For he was the man that introduced him, and many others, to anime through Robotech...

I found out this morning that a pioneer in Japanese Animation passed away over the weekend. Carl Macek died on Saturday at the age of 59. Mr. Macek isn't a name many would recognize in the anime world, but if you live outside of Japan, he was very instrumental in introducing you to anime.

He is most famous (and sometimes hated) for his work on the series Robotech, which itself was a work created from three separate anime series: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeda.  His task was hardly simple, as he needed to, essentially, take three separate and unrelated series, and create an arc between them, to enable the show to have a long enough run for syndication, at the same time localizing it. »

'The Losers' Director Considering 'Robotech' Movie

6 April 2010 8:58 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

With "The Losers" ready to hit theaters later this month, director Sylvain White has expressed his interest in helming an adaptation of the classic "Robotech" animated series.

"Well, ['Robotech' is] not a project that's greenlit," related White during an appearance at last weekend's WonderCon (via Sci-Fi Wire). "It's a great cult series. When it came out, I actually saw it in France, growing up. I saw it in French. It's a pretty amazing cartoon. And I'm hoping it's going to come to fruition."

"I read a draft that's really good," continued White. "I'm interested in doing it, but the project is not fast tracked or anything like that, so there's no official thing. There's no deal... They sent me a draft. I liked it. It's a work in progress."

"Robotech" was created in 1985 as a fusion of three separate Japanese anime series — "The Super Dimension Fortress Macross," "The Super Dimension Cavalry Southern »

'The Losers' Director Involved In 'Macross Saga' Movie

4 April 2010 9:20 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

DC Entertainment and Warner Bros.' The Losers opens in a few weeks, and its performance could make Sylvain White a much-sought-after action helmer. In the meantime, there has been inevitable speculation as to what his next project could be, and the most recent rumor connects White to Robotech, based on a seminal Japanese cartoon series.

Robotech, which first aired in North America in 1985, is actually an adaptation of three Japanese anime series; the most popular being arguably The Super Dimension Fortress Macross. That series — re-packaged as the First Robotech War or The Macross Saga — centered around a conflict between Earth and an alien race called the Zentradi. On these shores, Robotech helped usher in the popularity of mecha; that is, anime featuring giant robots, some of which are capable of transforming into vehicles.

Apparently, a film version of Robotech has been set up at Warner Brothers with erstwhile Spider-Man actor Tobey Maguire producing. »
