Genuine laughs from comics that were fourth string to me.

Warning: Spoilers
Ditto to the feelings about El Brendel who is about as funny as a toothache and a comic I always wanted to see extracted by one of those old fashioned stage hooks. But on occasion he gets funny material, and in this case, there's more laughs than normal with him and Tom Kennedy (second rate to brother Edgar) as idiotic security guards who end up in a haunted house complete with cemetery, furniture that disappears into a wall, and a Frankenstein like monster chasing them. In other films, I'd want them to be caught, but here, they're not as painful to watch although they're definitely dated. This is one that I could enjoy for second or third viewings and catch something that I probably missed the first time around.

Can this film change my opinion of El Brendel?
planktonrules21 November 2022
I have seen thousands of old movies and love nearly all the actors in these films. However, I have found El Brendel to be very tough to like...and if he's in a film, I'm inclined to skip it! But, against my better judgment I decided to see "Sweet Spirits of Nighter".

El Brendel and Tom Kennedy play dopey cops. First, a crook steals their car! Second, again and again, other crimes happen all around them....and they don't even notice! Later, a mad scientist trying to reanimate the dead comes into the story.

In so many ways, this film seems just like a Three Stooges film...but with two stooges. The Stooges' popular director, Del Lord, helmed this one and two of their most popular foils, Vernon Dent and Bud Jamison, are on hand as well. So is it good? Yes...in a very silly, dopey way....much like a better Three Stooges short. Not a must-see....but a rare chance to see El Brendel without disliking his character.

Another Columbia Joke Recycling Short
boblipton21 November 2022
El Brendel and Tom Kennedy, the two dumbest security guards in existence, look into a grave-robbing operation by a mad scientist.

I enjoy Tom Kennedy frequently and El Brendel very rarely, but this one doesn't average my opinion about them. Given the way Jules White's short comedy unit at Columbia recycled gags, scripts and props, you could get a good idea of how good a comic someone was by comparing his behavior with some one else in essentially the same comedy.

Unfortunately, here I couldn't be bothered, as both comics were too darned stupid for me to care about in this one.

There are people who enjoy this. I don't.
