Don't always trust a longtime friend
14 July 2008 | by (Norway) – See all my reviews

The director Tancred Ibsen is one of the great directors in Norwegian film-history. "Venner", which means "frirends" translated, has the international title "Struggle for Eagle Peak", but is more of a mystery and crime drama than a mountan climbing film. Thre film is based on a play by Arnulf Øverland.

This film is an intelligent story about a friend trying to get rid of a childhood friend. In the latter years he have found thet he hates him. He's not only after getting revenge and take the glory of friend's achievement and get his leading job in the firm. He has also planned in getting his woman, which is a all time love of his... He does this in a cunning way, but how it ends I won't tell here.

The two friernds are experienced mountain climbers and going to climb a difficult Mountain in the Rocky Mountains in 4000 meter above sea level. During the trip oner of them "loses" the rope and think that when a ravine comes, he is falling down with it. When reaching back home, there's a telegram that he has survived after all. This is the start of a hearing where the autorities try to find out what really happened.

Obviously the film is a bit dated 50 years later, but still the film catches your interest right from the start. It's an exciting story, and has a good atmosphere. Venner would probably get a 8/10 in the 60'ies, but now a 6 or a 7 out of 10 is more like it. Well worth to watch, and recommended for crime lovers.
