Brazilian spoof of The Wizard of Oz, with some surprising ups and many downs
guisreis11 December 2016
This is very irregular spoof of The Wizard of Oz, with some ups and many downs, which clearly overcome the former. One of the major drawbacks is the horrible edition work. The beginning of the three men in extreme poverty was surprising and nice, although not all the slapstick was good. I did not like only the anthropomorphic caracara falcons. Mussum and Zacarias's versions of Tin Man and Scarecrow were nice and preserving the traits of thee two characters from "Trapalhões" humor crew. After the crew comes to Oroz town, though, there is a nonsense fight between Didi and the coward Lion, who besides not being a lion challenges him, what is not expected for a coward (Dedé Santana, as usual, is not funny and acts badly). The judgment sung in Northeastern Brazilian "repente" style, though, was extremely good. The homage to "2001: a space odyssey" was quite unexpected and interesting. Anyway, it is impressive how strong was social critic in this child film, something quite unusual: not just an empty denunciation of the poverty and drought in Northeast, but also a grievance against the purchasing of votes, against the traditional power of landowners, against the idea that you may starve and die by thirst but not steal food, and against the view that water is a commodity. On the other hand, sexism and sexploitation (that were so extreme in Brazilian cinema) appear in the completely unnecessary exposure of women butts when the story moves to Rio de Janeiro, despite it was a film made for children.

Unintentionally hillarious!

Warning: Spoilers
And yes, I am a Brasilan civilian too, and I even thought this film was quite laughable too!

Literal title: The Tramps and the Magick in Oz

Plot (MINOR SPOILERS):

Failing to obtain any game to eat, being the only potential food in the severe drought of Northeastern Brazil, Didi (NOT Dorothy) and her friends, Soró and Tatu, put their hut on a wagon pulled by their burro, Salvation, and head for the town of Oróz (OZ), believing they can find water there. On the way, they find a Scarecrow, whom Didi calls Clo-brush (think clown and brush), besieged by vultures. So, what do Didi and her friends do? They kill and eat the vultures (!) and take the brainless Scarecrow with them, hoping a doctor at Oróz will put them in.

They next stumble upon a warehouse, finding a man in a metal vat of rum, which is his blood, yet he desires a heart. In the town of Oróz, Sheriff Lion works for the corrupt Colonel Ferreira, who owns a pond using gigantic frogs to keep people from obtaining water without paying. Lion's girlfriend, Aninha the schoolmaster, thinks he is a coward for not standing up to the Colonel.

The Tramps, with Vat and Clowbrush, arrive and promptly rob a bakery. Sheriff Lion puts Soró and Tatu in jail, while to redeem himself, he is ordered to supervise Didi, Vat, and Clowbrush in a search for water, which is their punishment. After disguising themselves as Ferreira's guards, they are nonetheless discovered, so they flee to a desert, where a saint points them to the Wizard of Oróz, who fiendishly supports their mission...

Interesting plot spoofing the Baum novel and NOT the famous Garland 1940 film, but even though "Os Trapalhões e o Mágico de Oróz" tries to be gruesome and dark in some scenes, it turns out being quite cheesy and laughable, thinking about bleeding puppets (!) and giant human eating frogs. I laughed untel I fell off coutch!

WARNING: Do NOT watch "Os Trapalhões e o Mágico de Oróz" after having intensive surgery!!! Won't do no good!

Not very good indeed...

This movie is an adaptation of the classic movie "The wizard of Oz". It is just like the original movie, but its passed in Brazil (!!!). Only watch this movie if you don't have anything to do. If you are not Brazilian, don't even bother to watch it.
