Storyline

Black comedy about an obsessive street graffiti artist, who falls obsessively in love with a frustrated artist he meets. Unfortunately, rather than trying to meet with her in a conventional way, he decides to mail himself to her with the help of a pet shop owner. Unfortunately, when he arrives, she is with another man, who immediately makes love to her against the box. Then when they decide to open the box, they stab scissors into the box, killing the man. The action then follows that the spirit of the graffiti artist can now communicate only with the artist and, fearfully, she decides she has to get rid of the body. Mona: You know you make little noises when you eat?
Jeff: I do?
Mona: Yeah.
Jeff: Okay. Tell me when I do it again.
[Jeff makes the noise]
Mona: You just did it!
Jeff: Oh. Yeah, that's my little happy noise.
Mona: ...Your little happy noise?
Jeff: Yeah. It's my way of thanking the food.

A dark romantic comedy that isn't very funny or romantic
7 May 2000 | by See all my reviews

Obviously the film is supposed to be a whimsical romantic comedy - with a dark edge to it. Unfortunately, it has some basic flaws. The plot moves along at a fairly slow pace. The main characters are not that interesting. It doesn't really rise above the level of "offbeat" or "quirky". The "story arc" is predictable after awhile. And, most importantly, It just wasn't that romantic, funny, or original.

I rented it (under the title, "Life in the Fast Lane") mainly because Fairuza Balk is in it. I wish she had a better story and script to work with. The film is mediocre at best.
