It is what it is...
30 January 2008 | by (Glen Allen, VA) – See all my reviews

If you're a huge fan of Paul Thomas Anderson (the film maker) or his hit movie, Boogie Nights, you're going to want to see this film... as a fan and a fan only. BUT don't look for a terrific short film. It is what it is and impressive for Paul being 17 and that's pretty much it.

If this short film was made today by a 17 year old in high school, the technology he'd have at his fingertips to edit and cut his film would be far superior to what Paul had to work with, which was pretty much VHS machines and editing from tape to tape. Still, when you consider Paul's vision and what he wanted to do and what he planned (the montage at the end, behind the scenes, phony interviews)... it's pretty impressive for a 17 year old kid. Plus the cast gave solid performances! It's true, like today, Paul brought the best out of his actors even at 17! haha

The Dirk Diggler Story is shot like a mockumentary featuring interviews with fictional characters like Jack Horner and friends of Dirk Digger, the former porn star, discussing his rise and fall. It's also cool to spot some of the connections to Boogie Nights (Dirk's friend is still Reed Rothchild and Horner repeats some lines such as Mr. Torpedo area!).

BUT the movie is still totally 80's! Kids running around with mullets, too much makeup… And by editing VHS to VHS, the film breaks apart in scenes and is very choppy but still Paul's attempt to do a slow motion scene at the end and a good script and you see potential, especially when you consider how young he was at the time.

It's also odd to watch it and see a a 17 year old discuss such vulgar things like sex and drugs, etc. Ernie had to be a laid back dad! haha

BUT in the end, it comes across as a film Paul had fun making. His father, Ernie, doing voice over and family friend and actor, Robert Ridgely playing Horner and other buddies of Paul's just having a good time.

Take it for what it is... a bit of Paul Thomas Anderson history.
