Trivia

The name of the protagonist's fraternity, Alpha Kappa Omega was based from the combination of the name of Alpha Kappa Rho and Alpha Phi Omega, two popular collegiate fraternity in the Philippines. It is also a play on the word "Ako" which is the Tagalog word for the first person pronoun "I" so that when you read the whole title disregarding the periods in the acronym it would be read as "Ako batch '81" ("I'm batch '81" in English). The ugly face of fascism
3 September 2002 | by (Toronto, Canada) – See all my reviews

De Leon uses the fraternity as a symbol of fascism. The hazing rituals, demoralization, torture and militarism all cover the imposition of the mighty few against individual rights of the hapless ones. The violent rumble at the end captures the fanaticism of the subjects working for the goal of attaining the ultimate high - power. Strong, very powerful, a work of great political understanding from Mike de Leon.
