Lizard's 'Beerfest' on WB menu

Beerfest will be the next film from the Broken Lizard comedy group. Warner Bros. Pictures, which has become the Broken Lizards' home studio, is acquiring the project from Sony, where it originally was set up, with an aim to shoot the movie in January in New Mexico. Beerfest tells the tale of two brothers who go to Oktoberfest in Germany and stumble upon a super-secret, centuries-old beer games competition, described as a Fight Club with beer games. After the brothers are dealt a humiliating defeat, they return to the U.S. and assemble a group of all-star beer drinkers in order to make a triumphant return. »

Fox adds U.K. digital channel

LONDON -- Fox International Channels said Tuesday it will launch FX+, a two-hour time-shifted channel, in the U.K. beginning Sept. 12 on British Sky Broadcasting's digital platform. The channel, which airs such shows as HBO drama The Wire and Kirstie Alley comedy Fat Actress in the U.K., said it also has signed a 17-title movie package deal with the BBC for library movies including Fight Club, Heat, The Client and Jet Li's The Enforcer. Fox International Channels operates such channels as FX, Fox, Fox Life and Fuel in Europe, Latin America and Japan. »

The beginning is startling and beautifully shot. As a couple relax over a picnic in the countryside, a balloon thumps down to earth near them and threatens to take off again with a child on board. Onlookers appear and try to drag it to earth before dropping back down. One clings on too long before plummeting to his death. This vivid, colourful scene - bright red balloon, bright blue sky, bright green grass - haunts its characters and its audience. From here on, all is muted and downbeat. One of the survivors (Daniel Craig) is haunted by another (Rhys Ifans), who believes they now have an unbreakable bond. He becomes a virtual stalker and the adaptation of Ian McEwan's book, which starts as a thoughtful philosophical inquiry, becomes a less convincing thriller.

Fincher eyes 'Zodiac' for Warners, Par

David Fincher is hunting serial killers again. The director, who helmed 1995's Seven, is in negotiations to direct Zodiac, a thriller that Phoenix Pictures is producing. Warner Bros. Pictures and Paramount Pictures are partnering to distribute the film. Based on the books Zodiac and Zodiac Unmasked by Robert Graysmith, and adapted by James Vanderbilt, the movie centers on the men who hunted Zodiac, the infamous serial killer who terrorized San Francisco for 25 years. Producing are Phoenix's Mike Medavoy, Arnie Messer and Brad Fischer, Fincher's producing partner Cean Chaffin, and Jaime Vanderbilt. Warners and Paramount are co-financing, with Warners distributing internationally and Paramount handling the movie domestically. Lynn Harris and Greg Silverman are overseeing for Warners. Marc Evans is overseeing for Paramount. CAA-repped Fincher is known for his edgy and stylish thrillers. His credits include Fight Club, The Game and Panic Room. »
