5 former Earth slaves make a brazen escape from the evil Galran Empire to the peaceful planet of Altea. There they are asked to pilot the legendary Golion robot, and defend Altea from the vile Galran Emperor Daibazaal and his vast forces.

(which owns the English adaptation of "Golion" under the name, "Voltron: Defender of the Universe") bought the rights of Golion from Toei Animation Co., the famous Japanese animation studio that created. This means that World Events has both the rights to the English adaptation and its original series, very unusual for a non-Japanese distributor. See more
In order to activate the Lions, each team member had to insert a special key. In many instances when Chief is starting the Golion forming sequence, his key can still be seen on his tunic, but then is also seen on the panel of his lion, and then moves in the same way - left to right - as it already did when first being used to activate the Black Lion.
