Storyline

In 1872 London in a world of humanoid animals, Willy Fog is the quintessential British gentleman of rigid sedentary habits, much to his new servants', Rigodon and Tico, pleasure. Suddenly, Fog is forced to take an extraordinary wager on behalf of a friend that he can circumnavigate the world in 80 days. Now, with little but a satchel carrying the necessary funds, Fog and his staff start their journey. Unknown to Fog, he is doggedly pursued by Scotland Yard detectives Dix and Bully on suspicion of a bank robbery. More seriously, however, Fog's movements are also being shadowed by Transfer, a villainous master of disguise who is commissioned by his enemies to interfere in the journey in any way he can. Regardless, Fog is determined to see the challenge through, finding dangers and friends, of which the gracious Princess Romy is the most welcome of new companions, on a journey unlike any other of their time. Trivia

This is one of the most accurate adaptations of the Jules Verne tale ever made. Even though the characters are humanoid animals, adds new characters, adds a balloon ride for the part of the trip, and makes a few changes (names and minor plot changes to account for the villains' schemes), for the most part the series adapts fully the major and minor plot points of the novel. Tico: I'm Tico, the mascot!
Romy: It's my turn, the gentle touch / I'm Romy, they love me so much!
Fog: Hey, now the story must go on, 'cause a lot of time has gone, we must be ready to go away!

A very memorable series
16 February 2005 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

This is such a fantastic animated series (for everyone, not just kids!) for a number of reasons. Firstly, there are obviously the lovable characters, the way we see them develop throughout the series is a joy to watch. Secondly, the story lines are enticing, you just have to know whats going to happen in the next episode- take the jungle episode and the evil worshippers approaching as a great example of how great this series was at cliffhangers. Thirdly, the music score is really fun to listen to. Although it is distinctly '80s' sounding, each tune really tends to capture the atmosphere of the moments in the series. For just a cartoon series there are so many 'true to life' things in this series- like morals, the evolution of friendships, romance, financial problems and solving problems. Not forgetting the enormous geographical value of this programme- how many places do they visit throughout the series? Point proved. The only thing I have to say against it is repetition. How many times do we have to hear them say they're hungry or they're late for a train? Mind you this recurrence amuses rather than annoys me.
