Roy Marsden Is Terrific
26 June 2017 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

This 6-part miniseries is rather low budget (each episode is around 25 minutes in length) but stars Roy Marsden as Chip turns in a terrific performance. It covers more than 40 years in Chips' career at the boys school Brookfield up thru the conclusion of WW I.

In the two big film versions of this James Hilton story, Robert Donat (he won an Oscar) and Peter O'Toole have starred as Chips, making him a familiar character to generations of moviegoers.

Marsden, best known for playing Adam Dalgliesh in a bunch of British miniseries, is perfect as Chips, the tall, introverted teacher of the Classics, who bumbles his way into a teaching job at Brookfield and slowly learns to take his place as a teaching master, touching the lives of thousands of boys.

A highlight of the story focuses on a very strong anti-war message as Chips is forced to read the seemingly endless list of Brookfield boys who are killed in "The Great War." He remembers them all.

Along with Marsden, Jill Meager is quite effective as Katherine as is Anne Kristen as the devoted Mrs. Wickett.
